What is corporate sustainability?
Corporate sustainability means running a business in a way that accounts for its full impact — not just financial results, but its environmental footprint, treatment of employees and communities, and governance practices. It's the business-level application of the broader concept of environmental sustainability, extended to social and governance dimensions.
The three pillars
Corporate sustainability is usually organized around the same three pillars as ESG:
- Environmental — emissions, resource use, waste, and biodiversity impact
- Social — labor practices, community relationships, and product responsibility
- Governance — board accountability, ethics, and transparent decision-making
Why it matters
A company's sustainability performance increasingly affects its access to capital, ability to win and retain customers, and exposure to regulatory and physical climate risk. Frameworks like CSRD, BRSR, and GRI exist to standardize how companies measure and disclose this performance.
