What Is Compliance Management?

Compliance management is the ongoing process of ensuring an organization follows the laws, regulations, industry standards, and internal policies that apply to it — and can demonstrate that it does, when asked by a regulator, auditor, or customer. It spans everything from environmental permits and product safety rules to data protection and anti-corruption requirements.

What a Compliance Management System Includes

A compliance management system is the structured set of processes an organization uses to manage this on an ongoing basis, typically including:

  1. Regulatory tracking — identifying which laws and standards apply, and monitoring changes to them
  2. Policies and controls — internal rules and processes designed to meet those requirements
  3. Training — ensuring employees understand the policies relevant to their role
  4. Monitoring and audits — periodic checks that controls are actually being followed
  5. Issue management — a process for tracking and resolving compliance gaps when they're found
  6. Reporting — documentation that demonstrates compliance to regulators, auditors, or business partners
03

Compliance Management vs. Operational Excellence

Compliance management is often one output of a broader operational excellence program — consistent, well-documented processes tend to produce compliant ones, while ad hoc processes create compliance risk almost by default.

04

Software Compliance Management

As regulatory requirements grow — from CSRD and EUDR in Europe to sector-specific EHS rules — many organizations use dedicated software to track obligations, automate evidence collection, and flag gaps before an audit does, rather than managing compliance through spreadsheets alone.
