What is hazardous waste?

Hazardous waste is material that's dangerous or potentially harmful to health or the environment — it may be toxic, ignitable, corrosive, or reactive. Common sources include chemical manufacturing byproducts, used solvents, contaminated materials, batteries, and certain industrial sludges.

What hazardous waste management involves

  1. Identification and classification — determining whether a waste stream is hazardous under applicable regulations, and which category it falls into
  2. Storage — containing hazardous waste safely and separately from incompatible materials until disposal
  3. Transportation — moving waste to a licensed treatment or disposal facility under regulated manifest and tracking requirements
  4. Treatment — reducing the volume, toxicity, or hazard of waste before final disposal, where possible
  5. Disposal — final handling through licensed methods such as secure landfilling, incineration, or, where feasible, safe recycling

Why it matters

Improperly managed hazardous waste is a leading cause of soil and groundwater contamination, and regulators (from the US EPA's RCRA program to equivalent regimes elsewhere) impose strict tracking and liability requirements on generators — meaning poor hazardous waste management is both an environmental and a legal risk, not just an operational one.
