What is hazardous waste?
Hazardous waste is material that's dangerous or potentially harmful to health or the environment — it may be toxic, ignitable, corrosive, or reactive. Common sources include chemical manufacturing byproducts, used solvents, contaminated materials, batteries, and certain industrial sludges.
What hazardous waste management involves
- Identification and classification — determining whether a waste stream is hazardous under applicable regulations, and which category it falls into
- Storage — containing hazardous waste safely and separately from incompatible materials until disposal
- Transportation — moving waste to a licensed treatment or disposal facility under regulated manifest and tracking requirements
- Treatment — reducing the volume, toxicity, or hazard of waste before final disposal, where possible
- Disposal — final handling through licensed methods such as secure landfilling, incineration, or, where feasible, safe recycling
Why it matters
Improperly managed hazardous waste is a leading cause of soil and groundwater contamination, and regulators (from the US EPA's RCRA program to equivalent regimes elsewhere) impose strict tracking and liability requirements on generators — meaning poor hazardous waste management is both an environmental and a legal risk, not just an operational one.
