What is supplier evaluation?

Supplier evaluation is how organizations decide which suppliers to work with, and how closely to manage the relationship once they do. Traditionally focused on cost, quality, and delivery performance, supplier evaluation criteria increasingly include ESG factors — emissions data, labor practices, and regulatory compliance such as EUDR.

Common evaluation criteria

  • Quality — defect rates, certifications, and consistency of output
  • Delivery reliability — on-time performance and lead-time consistency
  • Financial stability — risk of supply disruption due to a supplier's financial health
  • Compliance — regulatory and contractual requirements, including deforestation-free sourcing and labor standards
  • Sustainability data — emissions, resource use, and other ESG metrics needed for a buyer's own Scope 3 reporting

Why it matters

Weak supplier evaluation is a major source of supply chain risk — most companies' largest environmental and compliance exposure sits with their suppliers, not their own operations, which is why evaluation and ongoing monitoring have become a core part of corporate sustainability programs rather than a procurement afterthought.
